ANCIENT TIMES

''A clever way to tell the time using the sun''

An ancient miracle

Stonehenge is a monument built circa 2300 BC. It is constructed from large carved standing stones, placed in circles, on a rise in the English countryside. Although its function is still not fully understood, there are indications that the monument served as a sacred place, a health center and a burial place.

But beside these functions it also had another fascinating function, namely that of a time indicator. On the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun shines right through a number of stones on a stone called the ”Heel Stone”.  This moment is called the summer solstice.

How it works

The three rings rotate individually in the direction of the clock and indicate the hours, minutes and seconds.

The central sphere shines light through openings in the rings and this light forms the hands of the clock.

This creates a unique way of displaying time.
